Ep.10 – Drinking at Weddings

Here comes the booze! All ready to schmooze! In this edition of Bar Therapy, Dr Xander Gerrymander and Dr K talk about how drinking enters into the weddings.

Here comes the booze! All ready to schmooze! In this edition of Bar Therapy, Dr Xander Gerrymander and Dr K talk about how drinking enters into the weddings. The two of them recently got married, and they discuss the challenges of how to deal with such a monumental day when alcohol is involved. It sometimes involves really thinking on who to invite and who to not invite. Which friends and family can and cannot handle their liquor, what inappropriate things might come up in a diverse crowd, and what boundaries might need to be set forth and how to set them in order to avoid conflicts.

They also delve into the mindset of what might be going through certain attendees' heads when they see their friends or family so happy and how they potentially might perceive as their own personal life failures. They also want you to know, for the record, love comes when you find it, and there is no deadline. Buck up. Never say die. We’ll get along.

Ep.9 – Society vs. Bartenders

In the championship bout of the new century, Dr Xander Gerrymander and Dr K broadcast the match between society and how they perceive those night folks who work the service industry.

In the championship bout of the new century, Dr Xander Gerrymander and Dr K broadcast the match between society and how they perceive those night folks who work the service industry. Those folks in the late night industry are often getting into work when most other folks are getting off work, to serve you all the best food and drinks they can muster.

But after last call, they’re still working… cleaning, bussing, counting their tills and closing up shop. This means, depending on the state and how busy the night was, clocking out at two, four, even six in the morning. Count in wind down time, some of them don’t get to sleep until well past day break.

In this episode, they break down how hard it can be for them, the perceptions of laziness for not being able to wake up at a “normal” time and how society generally doesn’t work for their hours and how society and friends and family who don’t work those hours in general can be more helpful and understanding in their plight, in addition to the science behind substances, circadian rhythms and how hard it can be to try adjust to a more normal timeframe. _____

Ep.7 – Sober Customers in Bars

As a new trend in zero proof cocktails emerges and as some folks are going toward a more (or entirely) sober route but still wanting to have the bar experience, Dr. Xander Gerrymander and Dr. K delve into the world of serving dry customers in bars.

As a new trend in zero proof cocktails emerges and as some folks are going toward a more (or entirely) sober route but still wanting to have the bar experience, Dr. Xander Gerrymander and Dr. K delve into the world of serving dry customers in bars. For a while, NA drinks have mostly been sugar filled garbage drinks, but a new world is emerging in which bartenders are now being encouraged to use their craft to create drinks which look and taste amazing, minus the booze. Sometimes folks with groups of friends don’t want to let their friends know they’ve stopped drinking, so they go into how to deftly make sure they also feel welcome and comfortable, and why those folks might not want to let it be known they’ve taken the trip to teetotaling. Lastly they talk about why it’s important and just plain courteous for bartenders to at the least have a few great NA drinks up their sleeves, and if they wanted to go above and beyond, curate a craft mocktail menu.

There’s no crying in bartending!! That’s actually not true. There can be lots of tears. Dr. Xander Gerrymander and Dr. K go into the calls bartenders have to make in regards to patrons crying and how hard it might be to make those judgment calls in regards to if a patron is super happy, super drunk, or just super sad, how to assess, and what to do in such a situation. From behind the pine, they also talk about what bartenders do and where they go if they’re having a breakdown while tending (hint!! It’s the crying room!! Every bar has one!!) and how to reset afterwards, and how you can support your fellow coworkers in case they are having a rough day.

In this episode of Bar Therapy, Dr. Xander Gerrymander and Dr. K discuss the art of not overserving a patron at the bar. These involve the many overlying factors that can be convoluted at times, including the fine line of determining if a patron is at their limit, or possibly too if they may have a disability that makes them appear in such a way, and how to gently access such a situation. A lot of factors go into the legal calls bartenders have to make on a daily basis.
